چکیده

We study the impact of multilateral private information about inventory levels in twoechelon supply chain environments. We find that greater bargaining power of the downstream chain member promotes the efficiency of supply chain in terms of operational cost. More specifically, we focus on two polar cases: i) multiple suppliers with limited inventories supplying to a single retailer; and ii) a single supplier with limited inventory serving multiple retailers. In the former case, we show that the optimal inventory policy of the centralized cost minimization problem can be implemented even in the presence of private information, and the retailer can appropriate the full cost reduction of the entire supply chain. In the latter case, the centralized solution is not feasible in general. The contract that is optimal for the supplier can be interpreted as a simple ranking allocation rule, based on critical quantiles of an adjusted demand distribution that accounts for the incentives generated by the presence of private information. This rule reverses the order of all served retailers’ inventory positions, and may “overshoot” the positions of some retailers, i.e. push them beyond their optimal levels without private information.

The Effect of Bank Investment on Lending. Does Capital-Adequacy Matter?

In Basel III regulations, high risk coefficients are considered for banks investments. In terms of capital adequacy restrictions, the regulations state that if a bank makes a major investment in the non-financial sector, it must deduct the same amount of capital. This study examines the effect of banks' investment on borrowing by considering the role of capital adequacy, and also the impact th...

Optimal Procurement when both Price and Quality Matter∗

A buyer seeks to procure a good characterized by its price and its quality from suppliers who have private information about their cost structure (fixed cost + marginal cost of providing quality). We solve for the optimal buying mechanism, i.e. the procedure that maximizes the buyer’s expected utility, and discuss its properties. Many of the properties of the optimal buying mechanism when infor...

How does Social Media Affect Contribution to Public versus Private Goods in Crowdfunding Campaigns?

This paper examines the interplay among crowdfunding campaigns, social media activity and accumulated capital. Drawing on the emerging literature around social media and crowdfunding, and leveraging task-technology fit theory, we propose a set of hypotheses relating to the interaction between social media and crowdfunding campaign objective (public good campaign versus private good campaign), h...

Procurement when Price and Quality Matter∗

A buyer seeks to procure a good characterized by its price and its quality from suppliers who have private information about their cost structure (fixed cost and marginal cost of providing quality). We characterize the buyer’s optimal buying mechanism. We then use the optimal mechanism as a theoretical and numerical benchmark to study simpler buying procedures such as scoring auctions and barga...
